Sound Like Eddie Kramer

Software plug-in group replicates Hendrix, Led Zep sound

Maybe you aren’t a legendary engineer/producer like Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Traffic, Mott the Hoople, Carly Simon, Peter Frampton, Kiss, etc.) and your talent might not quite be in the same league as Kramer’s clients; but software developer Waves would like to help you sound a little like Kramer with its new Tape, Tubes & Transistors plug-in bundle.

Based on equipment that Kramer used at London’s Olympic Studios, the Waves algorithm elves sought to copy the studio’s recording chain. The plug-ins are the HLS Channel, PIE Compressor and the Master Tape.

The HLS Channel is based on an input channel on the studio’s Helios console. Preamp and three-band EQ are the tools in the plug-in. The PIE Compressor is modeled on Pye compressors, popular at the time and used by Olympic. Master Tape is modeled on an Ampex 350 (transport)/351 (electronics) 1/4-inch reel-to-reel tape machine. That plug-in offers everything from flux control to speed and wow & flutter.

The overall package offers 24-bit/96 kHz performances with TDM, RTAS, Audio Suite, VST and AU formats. Price: Native – $400, TDM – $500.
