Akamai to Support IPv6 in April 2012

Mar 28, 2012 – Infoworld reports that Akamai will begin support of IPv6 during April 2012. The company originally planned to introduce IPv6 support last year, but the changes to the production network took longer than originally anticipated. Akamai’s engineering team worked for two years to upgrade its 95,000 servers in 71 countries connected by 1,900 networks to support IPv6.

IPv6 uses a 128-bit address format and thus creates vastly more address space than IPv4.

Akamai carries between 20 percent and 30 percent of the Internet’s Web traffic on any given day — about 5Tb/s. Its customers include are Apple, Lands’ End, Ticketmaster, Travelocity, XM Satellite Radio, Clear Channel and many others.
