Bray Calls for End to Irrational FM Lockdown

Boston Globe columnist equates smartphones to transistor radios

BOSTONHiawatha Bray of the Boston Globe recently published a technology column promoting FM chips in smartphones.

He breaks down the current smartphone landscape and its relationship to FM radio. Only certain Android phones sold by certain mobile carriers have enabled it, and the NextRadio app, which works with the FM chip to facilitate discovery and listening, comes preloaded on Sprint phones (although the iPhone”s FM chip doesn”t work.)

As much as Bray is a proponent of FM for mobiles, he doesn’t think that radio can ultimately compete with the Internet”s offerings. However, he says that until AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon end their irrational FM lockdown, most of us will never get to choose.
