MENLO PARK, Calif.Recently in Digital Radio Update we introduced you to Facebooks project Aries. Now it seems Facebook is getting ever nearer to be becoming a full-blown mobile service provider, having recently debuted a new software routing system for its previously unveiled gigabit radio system.
Facebook’s Open/R software routing system was developed to route traffic sent using its new Terragraph radios and Aries multiple-input, multiple-out antennas. (Both were discussed in arecent articlein Digital Radio update.)
This radio system uses the unlicensed 60GHz band with multiple possible signal paths. Because 60 GHz isn’t good at penetrating walls or foliage, the smart routing protocol is essential for finding the best signal path for the data streams. This is ostensibly why Facebook has developed developed Open/R, according toLight Reading.

“Open/R makes it possible to prototype and deploy new network applications much more quickly than with the industrys standard development process,”Facebook adds.
