NEW YORK�The continued success of mobile streaming media depends upon the ubiquity of and unfettered access to radio networks that ultimately connect a user with the Internet. The City of New York is doing its best to see that the average citizen, walking down the street, will have wireless access; and the New York City Transit Authority is doing to its best to accommodate users on public transport as well.
The MTA (a subsidiary of the NYCTA) is undertaking a major upgrade of its bus transportation system by adding more than 2,000 buses with Wi-Fi and device charging capabilities. New MTA buses are expected to hit the streets as soon as next month, according to rcrwireless.com.
2042 new buses, representing about 40% of its current fleet, will have between 35 and 55 USB charging ports so passengers can plug in their mobile devices. The MTA said it is investing $1.3 billion in the new fleet,�mostly coming from its capital budget, but with some contributions at the state level as well.
MTA is also upgrading its existing buses with Wi-Fi and USB charging ports and said all express buses are set to be upgraded by the end of 2017.�
