CBS Stations Feed Philly ‘Digital Newsstands’

City-wide initiative combines news, tourist information and advertising with public safety and emergency alerts

The seven CBS O&O radio and television stations in the Philadelphia market are feeding a new street-level information, public safety and advertising digital signage initiative.

Marketing and technology company Center City Direct went live this week with 39 digital newsstands across central Philadelphia displaying the “CBS Always On” 24-hour news crawl service, news, weather, sports and tourist information on flat-screen HDTVs. Center City Direct plans to eventually expand the number of digital newsstands across the city to 120.

CBS 3 (KYW-TV), The CW Philly 57 (WPSG-TV), KYW Newsradio 1060, 98.1 WOGL, 94 WYSP, SportsRadio 610 WIP and The Big Talker 1210AM WPHT are the exclusive news providers for the marquee.

The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management will be able to push emergency messages, including AMBER Alerts, to the newsstands as necessary.

Center City Direct stated that the Philadelphia installation was the first digital newsstand initiative in the mid-Atlantic region. It is the result of an ordinance passed by the city council this summer allowing for digital signage for public safety and information purposes. The technology and content are managed by Center City Direct; advertising on the platform covers all costs of the initiative.
