Harris Begins Shipping Updated Codec For Dexstar Digital Exciter

Harris Corporation’s Broadcast Communications Division has begun shipping the new Ibiquity HDC digital audio Codec for every Harris Dexstar HD Radio exciter. In addition, Harris began shipping a CD-ROM software upgrade for the Dexstar AM/FM digital exciters already in the field on Sept. 24, shortly after receiving the code from the developer.
Harris and Ibiquity said the new HDC Codec addresses the remaining industry concerns about audio quality at lower bit-rates. For the 36- to 20-kilobit rates used by AM, the HDC codec improves AM sound quality and virtually eliminates annoying artifacts at the lowest bit-rates.
Current Harris Dexstar exciter users can easily upgrade to the new HDC audio coding with a software update with a CD-ROM.
