Bush Signs Do-Not-Call Bill; FCC to Enforce Oct. 1

President George W. Bush signed into law a bill removing the block to enforcing the so-called “Do-Not-Call” registry. Telemarketers have been trying to prevent the registry, which 50 million people have signed, from going into effect.
FCC Chairman Michael Powell stated the commission would enforce the rules against telemarketers beginning Wednesday (Oct. 1). Powell stated: “Last week, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals refused to block the rules pending review-as the telemarketing industry had urged-citing the strong public interest of leaving the rules in place. The commission intends to continue to administer and enforce its rules to the fullest extent possible as the litigation proceeds.”
