KELO Cluster Sold in Sioux Falls, a 'Great Growth Market'

Midcontinent Media is making its departure from radio after 52 years. It is selling its five stations in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Backyard Broadcasting, including KELO(AM), which it has owned since 1952. The company also built that area’s first FM stations in the 1960s.
The stations are AMers KELO and KWSN, and FM stations KELO, KRRO and KTWB. It will bring Backyard’s total holdings to 27 stations in six markets.
Larry Bentson is chairman of Midcontinent Media; Barry Drake is president/CEO of Backyard. Drake called Sioux Falls “the great growth market of the Midwest.”
Midcontinent started as a small movie theater business in Minneapolis during the Depression. It is now a diversified media company.
