Cumulus Media has promoted Robert Combs to vice president of engineering.

The announcement was made internally by Yancy McNair, who was promoted in April to senior vice president of engineering, overseeing engineering, telecom, real estate and purchasing.

“Robert will be stepping into the role I previously held, and I have full confidence in his ability to lead this critical function with excellence,” McNair told colleagues.

“With 26 years of experience at the company, including the last four as director of corporate engineering, Robert brings deep institutional knowledge and a proven track record of leadership.”

In February Combs will mark 40 years in radio. He started with Cumulus in 1999 as the chief engineer in Savannah, Ga. After 17 years he moved to Houston for six years and then moved up to corporate director of engineering. He has also been a regional DOE for 15 years, first over the Southeast Region and then the Southern/Gulf States Region.

Combs’ responsibilities will include managing engineering plans and schedules, supporting FCC compliance and technical filings, leading training and system upgrades, and contributing to real estate and tower consolidation initiatives.

He will lead the company’s regional engineering group, working with Vice President, Engineering Michael Gay and will continue as regional engineering lead for key markets including Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Albuquerque.
