Voice of America officials said they are adding another half-hour morning radio news program in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia, to cover the crisis in Somalia.
It will be heard on shortwave radio in Ethiopia and the region at 6 a.m. local time, with a repeat at 7 a.m., broadcast from VOA’s Washington headquarters at 0300 UTC.
VOA said it has reported extensively on the fighting that intensified in Somalia on Dec. 19. “After months of rising tension the Union of Islamic Courts took over much of the country’s center and south and declared a holy war on Ethiopia, which supports Somalia’s weak-but-internationally-recognized interim government,” it stated.
VOA’s Horn of Africa Service broadcasts 12 hours a week, in the Amharic, Afan Oromo and Tigrina languages.
