Zoom Shows New Digital Recorder

Portable 16-track recorder not aimed exclusively at TV/film

The Zoom R16 from Samson is a portable, battery-operable 16 track recorder that uses SD cards as its medium. The R16 has a built-in control surface of sorts with eight track faders, tape-style transport controls, jog-shuttle wheel and additional control buttons and encoders.

A USB port allows interfacing with computers. The R16 also has control surface functionality for manipulating computer-based DAWs. Cubase LE 4 ships with the R16, along with a 1 GB SD card.

I/O includes XLR/1/4-inch combo jacks. Built-in digital effects are included. Though a single R16 can record to eight tracks only at one time two R16s can be synchronized for full 16 track recording. The R16 natively records 16- or 24-bit/44.1 kHz WAV files.

Samson Director of Marketing Mark Wilder highlighted the unit’s versatility and portability along with the power to record to many tracks simultaneously.
