Austria: DAB+ Tests Scheduled to Begin in April

DAB+ tests, now scheduled to last a year, will start in Vienna this April. Several commercial stations and the Austrian public broadcaster ORF will be on the system

VIENNADAB+ tests, now scheduled to last a year, will start in Vienna this April. Several commercial stations and the Austrian public broadcaster ORF will be on the system.

In 2012 KommAustria worked to determine whether or not there was interest in DAB+ in Austria. While there were a large number of applications from existing commercial and public stations, as well as new stations, KommAustria determined that only about a third of the applicants plans were economically feasible, according to Radio.nl. They decided not to move forward at that time.

Fast forward to 2015: it is not known exactly which stations will be broadcast via the test mux, but it is known that there are several that are not currently available via FM; and ORF is planning to test a new station devoted to young listeners, given the working title FM21/ 3Plus.

There is already some talk that the test transmissions might go on for more than one year.In the meantime, it is hoped that KommAustria will start making a plan for DAB+ throughout the country.
