Digital Radio Updates From Slovenia, Ireland, UK and France

European DAB news indicates progress is moving apace on the continent

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia — The National Broadcasting Council of Slovenia (SRDF) has decided to switch from VHF to DAB+ in Ljubljana, and the most important radio stations in the country are to stop FM broadcasting on Feb. 22, 2022. After that date, they will be heard only via DAB+, reports infosat.de.

Slovenia now has 12 DAB+ services covering more than 70 percent of the population; thirteen private broadcasters and four programs of the public service broadcaster RTV Slovenia currently hold licenses for digital terrestrial broadcasting.

In Cork, Ireland, a new small-scale digital radio multiplex is about to begin a 12-month trial period. Authorized by a license from ComReg, the experiment will be operated by éirdab and have the capacity for 20 programs, according to radiotoday.ie.

éirdab’s CEO, David Duffy, says the project offers a low-cost DAB+ solution for stations wanting to get on air, and éirdab will use the same small scale DAB+ technology from Viamux that was implemented in Dublin last year by State broadcaster RTÉ. Coverage is expected for about 250,000 potential listeners.

In the UK, Arqiva recently announced a new agreement which will increase the coverage of Sound Digital’s commercial DAB multiplex in the UK expand by nearly 4 million people, reports getdigitalradio.com.

Arqiva will add 19 new transmitters to the existing Sound Digital network, increasing household coverage by over 1.6m new households in areas including Devon, Cornwall, South Wales, North East Scotland, East Anglia and Kent.

Sound Digital, the second national commercial DAB multiplex, currently carries 19 radio stations on its network, including Mellow Magic, Virgin Radio, Forces Radio, Sunrise Radio and Jack 3. It is the first national multiplex in the UK to use DAB+ technology for some of its services, according to the same article.

In Lille, France, the first test broadcasts with DAB+ started recently. The broadcasts will officially start on June 19, reports mediamagazine.nl.

There is already one regional DAB+ network operating in the northwest of France, supplemented by a number of local networks. On the regional DAB+ network (channel 8A), 13 stations will be broadcasting: Skyrock, Sud Radio, Metropolys, Oii FM, RCF Nord de France, Crooner Radio, Latina, M Radio, Radio Nova, Swigg, TSF Jazz, Generations and Mona FM.

In addition, there are two local networks on channels 7C and 7D; on these will soon be heard 26 radio stations such as Euradio, Playloud, Radio Boomerang, Radio Alfa, Africa No1 and Radio FG. The French public radio station FIP can also be heard via this local network. In addition, there are local networks in the French cities of Dunkirk and Calais.
