Dutch Local Broadcasters Hope to Start DAB+ Trials

The Organization of Local Broadcasters in the Netherlands is studying the possibility of its own pilot DAB+ test

AMSTERDAMThe Organization of Local Broadcasters in the Netherlands is studying the possibility of its own pilot DAB+ test.

OLON wants to use band III, as do the national and regional DAB+ networks, according toradio.nl. However, before any pilot test programs start, local broadcasters must decide whether or not the addition of these new networks is financially feasible. There are four possible options:

Using their own nation-wide network. This method would be similar to the current regional network system, but the areas of coverage will be smaller.

Using capacity of third party systems. MTVNL has channel capacity. The advantage is speed; the disadvantage is that there isnt that much capacity.

Individual roll-outs with low-cost systems. This method is also cheap but coverage is limited.

Join regional DAB+ networks already in existence. The problem is that across the country, there is limited capacity on such networks.

The Netherlands Radio Communications agency will make a decision later this year on the subject, and based on that, OLON hopes to have one or two local DAB+ trials going within a year or two.
