Multilingual EAS Comments Now Due in May

Comment deadline pushed back one month

Broadcasters and others will have more time to weigh in on the concept of multilingual EAS.

The FCC has pushed back the deadlines one month to file public comments (EB Docket 04-296) to May 28 and replies to June 12.

The Minority Media & Telecommunications Council asked for more time to address “each of the complex questions” raised in the proceeding about how to ensure emergency alerts in languages other than English are transmitted and received during a crisis. The MMTC, along with the Independent Spanish Broadcasters Association and the Office of Communications of the United Church of Christ and asked the commission to review multilingual EAS.

The FCC agreed it’s time to “refresh” the record that was originally opened nine years ago.
