RME Releases Optical I/O Box

Here’s a specialized, though handy little device for those who need it — RME Digiface USB Portable Digital Audio Interface.

Despite the rather generic name, it is actually an optical router/converter. You don’t see many boxes these days carrying optical connectors, especially more than an I/O pair. Those still working with ADAT and optical S/PDIF will be happy.

The box offers four optical I/O channels, totaling as much as 32 channels overall. Sample rates can range from 28 kHz to 200 kHz, depending on the audio formats.

The Digiface USB Portable Digital Audio Interface is small and completely powered by its USB 2.0 bus so there’s no wallwart to lug around and drop or lose.

Included is RME’s TotalMix mixer software and DigiCheck test and measurement software. It is Mac- and Windows-compatible.

RME products are distributed in the United States by Synthax. Price: $599
