PRI Gets $1.6 Million Grant

Gates Foundation funding to be used for global health reporting, online initiatives

Public Radio International has received a two-year, $1.6 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to lead initiatives to raise awareness, understanding and engagement concerning global health issues and development.

The grant continues a philanthropic partnership between the Minneapolis-based public radio program producer and distributor and the Gates Foundation starting in 2004.

Building on the base of global health and development content produced by its daily news magazine “PRI’s The World,” a co-production of PRI, the BBC World Service and WGBH Boston, PRI says it will use the grant to extend the program’s reach and coverage.

The public radio program producer and distributor hopes to generate momentum around issues and topics that can translate into action and change by enabling people worldwide to connect with each other on digital platforms, share their stories and have those stories develop into further reporting for “The World.”
