Les Keiter has died.
The passing of the sportscaster at age 89 provides the New York Times the opportunity to provide an interesting look back at a slice of radio — and baseball — history.
“Beginning in 1958, the Giants’ first year in San Francisco, and continuing for the next two seasons, listeners to WINS radio in New York heard the refrain, ‘Hi there again baseball fans, this is Les Keiter with Giant baseball.'” But those were bittersweet words for fans in New York whose team in reality had abandoned them for the West Coast.
