Following Indonesia’s decision last year to adopt both the Digital Radio Mondiale and DAB+ digital radio standards, a DRM member company has unveiled a multi-standard digital radio receiver.

The announcement was made at the annual DRM General Assembly, held this year in Jakarta, Indonesia, where the companies showcased a live demonstration of the receiver on Tuesday.

According to a release, DRM member CML Micro developed the dual-standard receiver to support Indonesia’s strategy of utilizing both digital formats. The project represents a collaborative effort between UK-based CML Micro, China’s Newglee Technology and the Korea-based Glovane Company.

Newglee also demonstrated its own DRM-capable portable receiver, the NGA-601 DRM/AM/FM receiver, according to the DRM Consortium.

CML Micro said in the release that Indonesia faces unique broadcast infrastructure challenges as an archipelago of approximately 10,000 islands.

By combining the DRM standard across medium wave, the 87.5–108 MHz band (VHF Band II) and the 174–240 MHz band (VHF Band III), along with DAB+ standard in the upper portion of VHF Band III, the country aims to deliver “robust, nationwide digital radio coverage.”

The receiver solution includes CML Micro’s DRM technology and Glovane’s DAB+ technology, with system integration and manufacturing handled by Newglee.

The companies believe the collaboration has resulted in a “low-power” operation that is suitable for portable, battery-powered devices and mass-market receivers.
