Pai Visits Puerto Rico

Progress is being made on the island, but it’s still slow going for many

SAN JUAN � FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is currently in Puerto Rico assessing the status of recovery efforts in the U.S. territory after Hurricane Maria. He consulted on next steps that the commission should take to assist in the restoration of communications networks.

While there, Pai has met with government and industry officials, including the vice president of the Puerto Rican Broadcast Association and the president of Puerto Rico�s telecommunication regulatory board.

According to the Nov. 5 DIRS report, 40 Puerto Rican AM radio stations are confirmed operational, and eight AM radio stations are suspected to be out of service; 23 AM radio stations are confirmed out of service by the Puerto Rican Broadcast Association, while one AM radio station has unconfirmed status. Two AM radio stations have been issued Special Temporary Authority to be offline. And 47 FM radio stations are confirmed operational, and eight FM radio stations are suspected to be out of service. Also, 22 FM radio stations are confirmed out of service by the Puerto Rican Broadcast Association and three FM stations have been issued Special Temporary Authority to be offline. Thirty-one FM radio stations have unconfirmed status.

In the U.S. Virgin Islands, two AM radio stations are confirmed operational, two AM radio stations are suspected to be out of service and one AM radio station has unconfirmed status. Two FM radio stations are confirmed operational and one FM radio station is suspected to be out of service, and one FM radio station has been issued Special Temporary Authority to be offline. Nineteen FM radio stations have unconfirmed status.
