Report: Podcast Downloads Increased 20% in 2022

Podcast listeners also tend to have a higher household income, says Triton Digital

Triton Digital has released its inaugural, year-end U.S. Podcast Report. The report provides insights into the evolving podcast landscape over the course of 2022, including listening habits and insights into audience demographics.

According to the report, podcast downloads increased by 20% in 2022 over the prior year, with an average of 3.8 hours of content downloaded per listener, per week.

Listeners also downloaded 5.6 episodes per week, on average, with News as the most downloaded genre, followed by Comedy and True Crime.

The most downloaded podcast in 2022 was “NPR News Now” and the number one top new show was NBCUniversal’s “Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra.”

The report also notes that monthly podcast listeners are younger than the general population, with more than 25% of monthly podcast listeners between the ages of 25 to 34.

In its press release detailing the new findings, Triton said podcast listeners tend to have a higher household income as compared to the general U.S. population and are overall be more educated and come from more diverse backgrounds.

The U.S. Podcast report, which will be released annually, incorporates data in-part from Triton Digital’s Podcast Metrics service a Demos+ survey of 12,000 monthly podcast listeners in the U.S.
