Former FCC engineer Wallace Edward "Wally" Johnson died on Aug. 21 after a prolonged illness, according to a death notice in the Washington Post. The Tappahannock, Va., resident was 84.
He served 37 years with the commission, the last seven as chief of the former Broadcast Bureau.
"While in public service, Mr. Johnson established a reputation, both nationally and internationally as an authority in broadcast communications, as evidenced by the numerous awards and citations he received," states his family in the notice.
After retiring from the FCC Johnson served as executive director of the Association for Broadcasting Engineering Standards and was a partner in the engineering consulting firm of Moffet, Larson and Johnson.
Among his survivors are his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Johnson; a daughter, a son and four grandchildren.
