BBG Responds on Central African Republic

French-language service and social media go into action

Sectarian and political violence in the Central African Republic has created an unstable situation.

The Broadcasting Board of Governors has responded by increasing the efforts of the VOA’s French-to-Africa Service.

A transmitter in the capital city, Bangui, is broadcasting “Le Monde Aujourd’hui” and a release says that VOA is increasing the number of news bulletins it will broadcast daily.

In addition, VOA is working with regional NGOs and American aid agencies to produce PSAs on food distribution, vaccination programs and other relief services.

A release also said that the BBG’s Office of Digital Design and Innovation is “enhancing its text messaging and Interactive Voice Response (IVR) services to the region. It has also developed a Symbian-based mobile app, featuring multimedia news, photo, text and video content. Symbian is one of the top four operating systems in the region and will be key to reaching this audience.”
