With the clock ticking on the start of the Federal Communications Commission’s newly adopted password complexity requirements for Emergency Alert System equipment, Digital Alert Systems said its DASDEC software is already up to the task.
As a result, radio and TV stations that use DASDEC for their EAS can comply with the new FCC rules “through capabilities that have long been built into the system,” the company said in a release.
In June, the commission adopted new cybersecurity requirements for all EAS participants, including a rule that all passwords be at least 15 characters long, as Radio World reported.
EAS participants must comply with the requirements within 60 days after they are published in the Federal Register. That date has not yet been announced.
But Digital Alert Systems emphasized that customers are already equipped to meet those requirements without needing a software update.
All current versions of DASDEC software support passwords up to 16 characters, the company said.

Beyond password length, the company said that DASDEC requires users to replace the factory-default password upon first sign-in and blocks common or prohibited passwords.
It also includes a mechanism to prevent password reuse and warns administrators when passwords are more than 180 days old.
DASDEC also locks accounts after multiple unsuccessful login attempts, which DAS said is designed to slow automated brute-force attacks.
For organizations managing multiple facilities or EAS devices, DASDEC supports enterprise Single Sign-On, or SSO integrations.
“As the FCC finalizes implementation details for its new cybersecurity requirements, the company will continue reviewing the rules and provide customers with any additional guidance needed to maintain compliance,” the release said.
