Garrison Cavell, Cindy Cavell Feted With NAB Engineering Achievement Awards

Husband-wife duo will receive the Radio and Television awards, respectively.

The National Association of Broadcasters is keeping this year’s Engineering Achievement Awards in the family, announcing that the Radio and Television Awards will be presented to husband-and-wife team Garrison C. Cavell, president of Cavell, Mertz & Associates, and Cindy Hunter Cavell, the company’s senior broadcast consulting engineer, respectively.

Celebrating 60 years in 2019, the Engineering Achievement Awards are given to individuals nominated by their peers for their contributions to advancing the state of the art in broadcasting.

Gary Cavell will be the recipient of the Radio Engineering Achievement Award. He has worked in management and technology positions for radio and TV for more than 40 years. Prior to the founding of Cavell, Mertz, Cavell worked in radio and television engineering management, facility design and construction, program production and station systems deployment in New Orleans. He also served as editor-in-chief for the 11th edition of the “NAB Engineering Handbook” and is an IEEE and SMPTE Life Member.

Cindy Hunter Cavell, who will receive the Television Engineering Achievement Award, has held positions as director of operations at ABC News’ Washington bureau, engineering director at local TV stations, vice president of Fox Sports’ Houston Technical Operations Center and broadcast engineering director for Sprint Communications. At Cavell, Mertz, she specializes in television stations and microwave system design and implementation. In her career, Cavell has won three Emmy Award for Technical Innovation, received the AWRT/SBE 2007 Outstanding Female Broadcast Engineer award, as well as the 2015 TVNewsCheck Women in Technology Award.

The Cavells will receive their awards during the We Are Broadcasters Celebration on April 9 during the 2019 NAB Show.
