HD Radio Rollout in 2007 Fared Better in Smaller Markets Than Large

The number of big-market stations turning on HD Radio in the past year fell off, while the number of stations in markets 51–100 held more steady.

The number of big-market stations turning on HD Radio in the past year fell off, while the number of stations in markets 51–100 held more steady.

According to an analysis from BIA Financial Network prepared for the Radio World HD Radio Scoreboard in the Jan. 16, 26 stations in the top 10 markets added HD Radio in 2007 (through mid-December), compared to 76 the year before and 117 the year before that.

By contrast, there were 118 stations in markets 51-100 turning on HD Radio last year, compared to 124 the prior year and 111 in 2006. One likely reason is that proponents started with the bigger markets when they launched their rollout, though by no means are all big-market stations now converted.

The scoreboard appears in the HD Radio News section of the Jan. 16 RW and provides trends in other market size groupings. Statistics are provided by BIAfn using Ibiquity data.
