Hurricane Evacuees Are Unexpected Neighbors at Radio Convention

NAB donates toys to children housed here.

A side story to this week’s NAB Radio Show was the presence of 1,200 evacuees from Hurricane Ike in another part of the same convention center.

The director of the Austin Convention Center Department said in a statement distributed by the National Association of Broadcasters, “We have been able to keep the groups cordoned off from one another, giving the evacuees as much privacy as possible. At the same time, the show organizers for NAB have responded to the plight of the residents from the Houston-Galveston area.”

The City of Austin set up one of four area shelters with support from the American Red Cross of Central Texas.

The NAB donated several hundred toys and games to the evacuee children housed at the convention center.

NAB representatives and Convention Center staff helped distribute toys in the play area in Exhibit Hall 2.
