Kevin Martin, the former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, has co-founded the investment firm Carmichael Partners.
The new company is based in Charlotte, hometown of both Martin and private equity expert Brian Bailey, a UNC classmate of Martin’s.
Bailey, most recently of Carousel Capital, said in an e-mail to associates that the new company will invest in family-owned and closely held private businesses, according to Charlotte-area newspapers.
President George W. Bush nominated Martin, a Republican, to the FCC in 2001. He moved up to chairman in 2005. After resigning from the commission a year ago, Martin joined the Washington-based Aspen Institute.
He’ll continue his Washington legal work with the Patton Boggs law firm, according to accounts.
