The Democratic senator from Illinois (and presidential candidate) Barack Obama is a better basketball player than FCC Chairman Martin.

That’s according to someone who knows: the chairman.

Before we got to the more serious questions at Martin’s recent chat with the press, the topic of whether or not he knew Obama came up. The chairman said in his first year of law school at Harvard, he and Barack used to shoot hoops in the gym — during breaks from their law school homework during the fall of 1990 and spring of ‘91.

Asked whether Barack leaned toward the right or left, the chairman smiled, laughed and said Obama went right down the middle.

He joins an arena already occupied by Sens. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D. and Trent Lott, R-Miss. as well as Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., in opposing FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s hopes to relax key rules and wrap up the ownership proceeding by the end of the year.

During a break I asked the chairman if he was still committed to trying to get a vote on media ownership by the last public meeting in December; he had no comment.
