NAB Exhibitor Viewpoint: Marie Summers, BSI

Making remote access to automation software easy and affordable

The spring NAB Show is approaching. Between now and then Radio World will conduct several short Q&As with manufacturers about their plans and offerings, to help you get the most out of the big annual trade show. Marie Summers is sales manager for Broadcast Software International.

Radio World: How has business been for the company since last year’s NAB Show?
Marie Summers: Growing. The NAB Show was a great show and we have been keeping busy with customers moving to new computers and upgrades.

RW: What are you hearing from your customers about their business outlook this year?In what areas should we expect growth or the most interesting projects?
Summers: Many are doing better than last year but are cautious. They are interested in spending money in a way that is useful. I think streaming will continue to grow and content distribution as well.

RW: You’ve been active in the broadcast software market for many years. What’s the biggest problem or challenge facing users in this segment right now?
Summers: It will be important for engineers and staff to access their station from a remote situation. Often stations are pushed to bare bones as far as staff goes so it will be important to make remote access easy and affordable.

RW: What new goodies will your company be showing? Why should attendees visit your booth?
Summers: Simian Remote for Android! We are so excited to have this available for NAB. We have had remote access for iPad, iPhone and Windows desktop but now we can include Android. It was the number one remote request we have had in the last couple years and it is now here!

RW: What do you anticipate will be the most significant technology trend at the 2016 NAB Show?
Summers: Last year it was the use of drones … who knew? I hope to see some cutting edge technology that will allow stations to work smarter.

RW: How do you like the new North Hall/floor layout?
Summers: The North Hall move layout looks good. Back when I started we were always in North Hall and then moved to Central Hall. It will be interesting to see how the flow of the foot traffic changes.

RW: How has IP technology affected your company?
Summers: Of course it is changing what we do and how we do it. It offers solutions that we may not have been able to offer in the past.

RW: Social media is the new marketing frontier these days. Is it affecting the way your company does marketing/business?
Summers: We are just starting the journey into Social media so it still a learning experience for us.
