The spring NAB Show is approaching. Between now and then Radio World will conduct several short Q&As with manufacturers about their plans and offerings, to help you get the most out of the big annual trade show. Todor Ivanov is CEO of DEVA Broadcast.
Radio World: How has business been for the company since last year’s NAB Show?
Todor Ivanov: DEVA has a work ethic that is based on the commitment to the constant improvement and delivery of equipment that offers value for the money. We have been focusing our efforts on maintaining the same high level of quality that our customers have become accustomed to. As a result, we have been experiencing a remarkable increase in interest and demand for our products from the North American market. This year in particular we are planning on participating in all major North American broadcast events. DEVA aims to cater for all market requirements and we are pleased to have the opportunity to exhibit our gear at all the important industry venues.
RW: What new goodies will your company be showing? Why should attendees visit your booth?
Ivanov: As usual, DEVA will be showcasing several new products at this year’s NAB Show. These include the Band Scanner II, DB91-TX/RX, DB910, DB6000-STC and DB6400. We’ll be on stand N4037 in the North Hall and would be delighted to give show-goers a first look at the new equipment. New features, impressive functionality and design, as well as reliability, are just a few of the technological qualities our products on display will offer. The DEVA team will be present to answer questions and provide product details so that our clients can make the best and most informed choice.
RW: What do you anticipate will be the most significant technology trend at the 2016 NAB Show?
Ivanov: I am proud to say that each DEVA product so far has been a success. This gives us a good foundation to build on and a solid basis for development with the type of devices that our clients need. Traditionally though, the bulk of the interest in DEVA’s equipment has mainly been directed at our monitoring and measuring products. Even so, for the last couple of years we have also enjoyed increased interest in our IP audio transmission devices. The DB90/DB9000 series is an established bestseller and will soon be joined by several new additions to our IP audio gear. I am confident that with their extensive feature set, these products will receive due recognition from our clients.
RW: What do you think about the new hall/floor layout this year?
Ivanov: I regret to say that every year the space devoted to radio becomes smaller. Other media are developing fast and occupying a significant part of the space that previously seemed to be reserved for radio. But despite that, it is my personal opinion that radio is still enjoying immense popularity and playing a major part on the market, as is evident from the steady level of interest from clients in this field. There are a large number of companies with a radio focus, and the latest trends in digital radio broadcasting are helping this business develop even further. I expect that in the coming years, exhibition organizers will take this into account and we will see an increasing amount of exhibition space dedicated to companies that represent this market segment.
RW: You’re a show veteran, what’s your favorite thing about the show? Least favorite thing?
Ivanov: What matters to us the most is the opportunity to meet our clients face to face, discuss their needs directly and discuss the capabilities of our products. An exhibition is not only a venue where we advertise our equipment, but also a place where we have the opportunity to listen to what our clients have to say. Their recommendations help our engineers develop products to best meet their requirements. Each new expo gives rise to a multitude of ideas for new devices based on our customers’ suggestions and to finding new technical solutions for tasks, which previously seemed impossible.
RW: How has IP technology affected your company?
Ivanov: Year after year we are pleased to report on a growing interest in our IP audio products. It is for this reason precisely that each year we add several new IP audio devices to our existing portfolio. As already mentioned, that portfolio is to be expanded with the launch of the new DB91 series and the DB910, which are already generating a lot of interest from our clients and are among the products to be showcased at this year’s NAB Show.
RW: Social media is the new marketing frontier these days. Is it affecting the way your company does marketing/business?
Ivanov: Yes, during the last few years we have been establishing new business contacts through the social networks with increasing regularity. It is a great boost to any business because it gives exposure to a much wider audience and provides additional channels through which customers can be reached. Social media is an essential element of today’s society and our presence there is a fast and convenient way of reaching a larger number of users. They give potential clients easier access to information on how our company is developing and what the latest DEVA engineering solutions are, instant update on any DEVA news, events or products, and quick answers to their inquiries.
RW: What are you hearing from your customers about their business outlook this year?
Ivanov: Reports vary depending on the region. In some parts of the world, radio is still at its peak, enjoying immense popularity and growing. This also means a high demand for radio gear. In other parts of the world, it is starting to lose its position and is getting replaced by the new technologies and types of media. As any other business, radio also goes through highs and lows. Fortunately for us, it still retains a stable market position and the radio business as a whole is at a high level. I think that whatever the expansion of other media, radio will not be fully replaced. The large number of inquiries and orders from all over the world indicate that this business continues to develop.
RW: In what areas should we expect growth or the most interesting projects?
Ivanov: This year DEVA’s focus will be on developing and manufacturing audio processors. Our team of engineers is combining its vast technical expertise with that of a well-established name, which reinforces DEVA’s presence as a driving force in this field. As our customers are also well aware, we have recently developed, and are about to launch, the latest DEVA audio processor the DB6000, bringing users enhanced features, design and affordability and meeting even the strictest demands.
