Reuters: China Active in U.S. Radio Market

Investigation shows multilevel subsidiaries leasing time and owning stations

News service Reuters has published a lengthy story, “Beijing’s Covert Radio Network Airs China-Friendly News Across Washington, and the World,” on Chinese government activities in the U.S. radio broadcasting market.

According to the Reuters piece, through a series of subsidiaries, the Chinese government is airing uncritical and China-friendly news and programming. Broadcasts are in English and Chinese languages.

The activities involve either outright ownership of stations through a U.S.-based entity or the leasing of time on stations by the U.S.-based entity, G&E Studio Inc. The entity is majority-owned by a Chinese government subsidiary.

The Reuters piece also brings up legality issues.
