Salon de la Radio 2017 Extends Reach

The Paris-based event aims to “offer radio professionals free access to an international radio show”

PARIS — Le Salon de la Radio, now also called the European Radio Show, is slated for Jan. 29–31 at the Charlie Parker Center in the Grande Halle de la Villette.

With “Global Media” as its theme, the three-day event, which has in the past honored Québec, Switzerland and Belgium, will this year put special focus on the United Kingdom. On agenda are a number of U.K.-oriented sessions and debates, as part of the show’s celebration of its neighbor to the north.

“Britain is a very innovative country, and we are organizing more than 10 conferences in English only, so that one of the four simultaneous session tracks will be offered in English throughout the 2017 conference,” said Philippe Chapot, director of Salon de la Radio/European Radio Show. “In 2018 we plan to offer two of the four tracks in English, and we will maintain the 50 percent ratio in the future.”

GLOBAL ASPECTS
In expanding its content with English-language presentations and international topics, the venue is naturally evolving to reach a more global audience. Chapot explains that they decided to open their doors to non-francophone visitors this year in order to “give all radio professionals free access to an international radio show, where they can find information on all aspects of the radio industry.”

He sees the European Radio Show as a complementary event to IBC and RadioDays Europe, with each event attracting a specific audience — the former reaching mainly technical directors, the latter targeting CEOs and program directors. “Not all professionals can visit those events, particularly for financial reasons. Salon de la Radio has always had a free entrance policy and targets radio staff of all levels. It’s important to unite these people and let them shape the industry together.”

Spread over a surface of 4,000-square-meters, Chapot says the 2017 edition will play host to more than 100 sessions and workshops with some 180 local and international speakers.

Sessions on tap include “Community Radios: Diversify Financing”; “Audience and Branding — Can You Get Inspired by e-Sport?”; “WorldDAB Session — Digital Radio in U.K. and Europe”; and “How to Declare Your Web Radio in France?”.

In addition, during the European Radio Show, the European Broadcasting Union will take the opportunity to officially announce its appointment as the dot-radio domain administrator. A conference will be held on Sunday Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. to provide details regarding domain allocation and procedures.

AGENDA
The sixth annual Rencontres Radio 2.0, which covers topics related to opportunities offered by the internet to monetize radio content and advertisement, will also take place during the European Radio Show. Organized by Nicolas Moulard and Xavier Filliol, the gathering is scheduled for Jan. 30.

Also on agenda are the Prix On’R Award ceremonies to celebrate young talent in radio and television, as well as the best radio stations of the year in nine different categories. As in previous years, a live radio show will air directly from the exhibition floor. The broadcast is organized in association with Broadcast-associes, A2PRL, Maxi l’Air, MultiCam Systems, RCS Europe, Save Diffusion, towerCast and Vizion’R.

The 2016 edition played host to 79 exhibitors, of which 10 percent were international; 4,951 visitors; 180 speakers; and 50 sessions and workshops. In addition, it attracted delegations from Haïti, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and Africa. Chapot says he expects to reach 100 exhibitors this year with about 30 percent coming from abroad.

The Salon de la Radio will be open Sunday Jan. 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesday Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
