The long-awaited iPhone app for satellite radio will be available Thursday, according to Sirius XM, which is contacting customers curious about the new offering.
A customer service rep told Reuters that subscribers would be able to download software on June 18 that lets Sirius XM content play on the Apple iPhone. The iPhone software will be free for customers who subscribe to the Sirius XM web service, otherwise it will cost $3 a month.
With car sales down observers see the offering as a way for the satcaster to gain new subscribers. However several popular applications available in Apple's App store include free Internet music services such as Pandora and Slacker, as well as iheartradio from Clear Channel.
