They’re Taking on ‘Morning Edition’

Public Radio International and WNYC, New York Public Radio will collaborate with the New York Times, the BBC and WGBH on a new morning drive news program for public radio.

The groups hope to provide competition to NPR’s “Morning Edition.”

The new show is scheduled to launch in early 2008. It will be produced out of WNYC’s new studios in lower Manhattan, where WNYC will move this fall.

The organizers say the program will represent a new sound in public radio’s morning drive, departing from the highly-packaged format – with pre-recorded interviews and long features – that has become the medium’s hallmark sound.

Their show, the groups say, will be all live and personality-driven.
