Toven to Edit Radio

Bell and Shipps promoted

Shane Toven has been named the new editor of Radio magazine, NewBay Media announced today.

Toven comes to the position from Wyoming Public Radio, where he is director of engineering. He will leave that position to concentrate on Radio. He is also the chairman of SBE 48 (Denver) and is CBRE and CBNT certified. Toven has been a contributor to Radio and Radio World magazines.

Paul McLane, editorial director for the NewBay Media Broadcast, Broadcast & Video Group said of Toven, “He brings a rare combination of technical and management skills, a familiarity with new media and new platforms, and a presence in local and national radio engineering circles.”

Toven replaces long-time editor Chriss Scherer, who resigned in March but is still an advisor to the publication.

In the same announcement, NewBay Media also said Radio Associate Publisher Steven Bell has been promoted to publisher and Senior Associate Editor Erin Shipps has been promoted to managing editor.

Bell joined Radio, then BE Radio, in 1995. He led the magazine through an increase in frequency from six to 14 issues per year. He is a former marketing director for Intertec Publishing. Bell has been heard on the radio in Kansas City for 36 years, currently on KCFX(FM), a classic rock station.

Shipps joined Radio in 2007 as Associate Editor. She previously worked at Ogden Publications in Topeka, Kan. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas in journalism with an emphasis in magazines in 2005.
