John Lennon will retire from the Voice of America, effective Dec. 28, after 44 years in broadcasting. He is currently VOA’s Associate Director of Strategy and Planning and reports to Director David Ensor.
Ensor praised Lennon’s service to the international broadcast community: “No one has a keener understanding of all aspects of U.S. international broadcasting, and no one believes more in our mission and the importance of providing trusted news and information to our worldwide audiences.” Ensor added, “Since my arrival a little over a year ago, I have relied heavily on John’s advice on a wide range of issues that impact the future direction of the Voice of America.”
“I’ve been privileged to play a leadership role in VOA’s continuing effort to provide a unique and valuable service for our audiences — on radio, television, the Internet, mobile devices, and social media,” Lennon said.
He added: “At a time of increased competition from state-controlled media in China, Iran, and Russia, and with the continuing rapid growth of private broadcasters and social media worldwide, there is a greater demand than ever for VOA’s accurate and comprehensive news and information. The United States needs a strong Voice of America now and in the future, and I’ll be watching its progress as I move to the next stage in my career.”
Lennon has been in a number of positions within the VOA — from editing and production early in his career through regional operations and then higher level management later on.
