Weekend Online Listening Up

Weekend Online Listening Up

It was the “first weekend of summer,” and with that, a tiny station from Martha’s Vineyard made its debut in the MeasureCast Internet Radio Ratings for the week of May 21 to 27.
At No. 22, adult alternative WMVY(FM) in Vineyard Haven, Mass. streamed 10,413 hours in the past week. Overall, Internet radio listening increased 38 percent over the previous week, with Internet-only Webcasters holding just over half of the top-25 slots.
This is a significant increase for Net-only Webcasters since early April, when the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the Screen Actor’s Guild warned advertisers they expected to be paid triple rates for any commercials played online that also aired on the terrestrial broadcasts.
As many terrestrial broadcasters pulled their streaming content from the Internet, listeners found alternative online music sources from Webcasters. Listener-formatted MEDIAmazing.com has reigned in the No.1 slot for 4 weeks, while the other top slots have traded variously from 3WK.com at No. 2 in the past few weeks to Radio Margaritaville and Virgin Radio swapping Nos. 3 and 4.
Classical radio stations, which in previous weeks appeared to be one of the most popular formats during the peak online listening time — business hours — fell off during the week before Memorial Day. WCPE(FM) was the only classical station that registered in the Top 25 this week, at No. 13.
Classic rock, CHR, alternative rock and sports were the top formats in the week.
