WMMR Raises 2.8M Pounds of Food, $1M Dollars

Beasley radio station donates to Philadelphians in need

For the last 25 years, WMMR(FM) in Philadelphia, Pa. has hosted an annual food drive and community fundraiser just in time for the holidays. This year the Beasley Media Group station raised 2.8 million pounds of food and more than $1 million dollars cash at its annual “Preston & Steve Camp Out For Hunger” event.

According to a Beasley press release, all proceeds will benefit those in need throughout the greater Philadelphia area. Food and donations will be given to local hunger relief organizations through Philabundance, Delaware Valley’s largest hunger relief organization.

The fundraising event — which took place over five days at the beginning of November — was hosted by WMMR’s Radio Hall of Fame morning personalities Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison, both of whom camped out and broadcast live outside of Xfinity Live! in south Philly.

The radio duo started their food drive back in 1998 after recognizing that hunger was a real issue in the Philadelphia area, said Beasley. Their initial goal was to raise one ton of food.

“We’ve been doing this for twenty-five years and I still am blown away by the outpouring of support,” said Elliot. “To see people from every walk of life show up and donate warms my heart beyond belief.”

This year’s event featured the return of walk-up food donations in addition to the “Drive Thru” system. Donors were invited into the broadcast tent to watch the show live. Beasley said Subaru of America provided 551,065 pounds of food, the largest donation from a business.
