Handy Engineering Apps

Dan once worked in a giant basket — see the picture

This Off the Beaten Path picks up a miscellaneous collection of sites that engineers might enjoy.

Handy Apps for “Engineering Sorts”
Here’s a fun collection of apps that engineers may like. The PDF creator for your phone is one I often use (and like a lot!).

Ten Most Bizarre Buildings
I’m a fan of architecture, but this link brought a great surprise as it includes a place I worked as an A/V man. One of the most bizarre buildings shown is the Longaberger Co. corporate office building in Newark, Ohio.

I can add this bit of info. If you look closely at the pic, you’ll see part of the roof appears to be glass. That is the glass roof for the atrium, which is open through all seven floors of “the home office” (as it was called). Because of this milk glass ceiling and because this building is in the land of cold weather, those basket handles can be heated to prevent ice from forming and dropping through the glass ceiling in the winter. It was a fun and great place to work. Oh, and besides this building, there were numerous other buildings with a total of about 3 million sq. ft. of “basket making” manufacturing space! Inside Longaberger included my work — LTV (Longaberger Television) and RadioL (Radio Longaberger)!

Behind the Scenes of SNL
One of the funniest long-running live TV shows is “Saturday Night Live.” It’s always fun to look at pics from the show and its making. Here are some neat “behind-the-scenes” pictures from Season One (1975).

And Finally …

Technology and Star Trek
Here’s a fun little quiz called “Real Tech vs. Star Trek.” What’s real and what is from Star Trek? Spoiler alert: Some are trick questions.
