Fraunhofer IIS will highlight at IBC2013 the extended High Efficiency AAC (xHE-AAC) upgrade to the AAC codec family, which the organization says, is suited for music streaming via wireless networks and digital radio systems.
According to Fraunhofer, xHE-AAC provides significantly improved audio quality at low bit rates between 6 and 64 kbps and above for both music and speech, making it especially valuable for applications where bit rates vary or are set very low.
The codec’s bit rate efficiency also creates new space, which can either be used for new programs or tracks, or can simply be converted into cost savings — a feature digital broadcasting services can benefit from.
At IBC2013, Fraunhofer will demonstrate a typical broadcast application using Extended HE-AAC, showing a complete digital radio encoder/decoder-chain.
