UL Solutions recently issued a notification that a certain network communication cable may pose a fire hazard.
“The communication cable is marked for use in Plenums and does not comply with UL Solutions’ Safety Standards for the application,” the company said, even though the box bears a gold holographic UL label.
The product is identified only as “High-Performance Network Cable Category 6 Plenum 550 Mhz,” sold in lengths of 1,000 feet.
UL Solutions recommends that the product be removed from service if you come across it. It said it identified at least one use of this cable, in a particular model of security camera.
UL Solutions was formerly known as Underwriters Laboratories. PS: A Radio World reader spotted this notice and shared it with us; he added in his email, “Always bad when a plenum cable is a fire hazard. Kind of defeats the purpose.”
