HD Radio on the Agenda at CES 2010

Jan 20, 2010 2:42 PM, By Mark Krieger

HD Radio may not have been the lead story at this year’s International Consumer Electronics show but there were plenty of examples on display and a number of announcements regarding new applications and automakers adding HD as both standard and optional equipment on a growing number of product lines:

Luxury automaker Audi says HD radio technology will be added as standard equipment in its 2011 A4, A5 and Q5 models, and will be available with the optional navigation packages as well. Those vehicles are slated for delivery by fall of this year.

Volkswagen of America revealed that it is including HD Radio technology to those vehicles equipped with its DVD navigation system. Features will include multicast reception and real-time navigation updates.

U.S.-based Ford continued to make a ripple with its late December announcement that HD Radio Technology will be available on most 2011 Ford vehicles — including the world’s first factory automotive implementation of Itunes tagging. Meanwhile, its luxury Lincoln brand plans to offer HD Radio combined with Neural surround technology in its high end THX certified OEM audio packages for 2011 models.

Korean Automaker Kia boasted about its addition of HD Radio as an OEM option on select models, but rival Hyundai grabbed the spotlight with its 2010 Sonata, which begins delivery this month with OEM HD Radio as standard equipment.

At the Ibiquity Digital booth there were a plethora of portable, tabletop, component and automotive HD receivers, with 25 new flavors of HD Radio products featured, along with new HD Radio technology applications such as CAP EAS and other specialized data services.
