Belgium Public and Privates Team up in Radioplayer Project

Three major media groups to join Radioplayer Worldwide

Flemish Media Minister Sven Gatz (pictured above) announced that the Flemish language public broadcaster VRT (Radio 1, Radio 2, MNM, Studio Brussel and Klara) and media groups Mediahuis (Nostalgie) and Medialaan (Qmusic, Joe) intend to join forces to offer their radio stations on the web player, Radioplayer Worldwide.

The three partners intend to apply for a license with the universal radio player after final approval from VRT’s board of directors. According to Gatz, the stations expect to implement the web player as soon as possible but it “may take some time.”

Radioplayer Worldwide was founded by the BBC and major commercial radio stations in the United Kingdom. Today the not-for-profit organization is operational in 10 countries. In Belgium, French-language public broadcaster RTBF and several commercial stations, including Bel RTL, Chérie Belgique, DH radio, Fun Radio, Impact FM, CFM Radio, MAX FM, Mint, Nostalgie, NRJ Belgique, Passion FM, Radio Prima and Radio Contact began using Radioplayer jointly in April 2014.

“I’m quite happy with this collaboration,” said Gatz. “It is in line with the government’s plans and the efforts to strengthen the Flemish media ecosystem. And just like DAB+, Radioplayer be part of the new digital radio listening landscape.”
