Tonmeisters Meet in Cologne

Annual gathering to feature digital radio day

The 27th Tonmeistertagung (tmt27) is scheduled for Cologne, Germany, 22–25 November.

According to organizers, on tap is a program featuring more than more than 160 papers, poster presentations, workshops, round tables, and many other events from 20 different subject areas. Running simultaneous to the conference program is a technical exhibition where 176 manufacturers and suppliers will display their products.

Organized by the Verband Deutscher Tonmeister (VDT), the German Tonmeister Association, the pro audio event will convene at the Congress Centrum Nord of the Koelnmesse exhibition center.

Areas of focus during the convention will include high-quality 5.1 surround sound and HD video as well as “3D audio.” There will also be workshops presenting aural examples in the Auro-3D format using a 9.1 monitoring system and a roundtable discussion on the current status and future of 3D audio.

The VDT and the Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT) teamed up on the first day of the event to present IRT Digitalradio-Tag (IRT Day of Digital Radio). During this designated day, broadcast and technical experts discussed the current situation of digital radio in Germany. Other key elements of the conference program will be loudness, recording and production, spatial audio, and stage and theater.

As in previous years, Tmt27 puts theory into practice with sound engineers, producers, and students presenting their recordings to a professional audience, followed by public discussions and reviews. This, says the organizers, gives visitors the chance to compare different aesthetic approaches and qualities while the presenter benefits from the feedback on his or her product.

In addition, the TMT Academy will hold seven hands-on workshops, which cover subjects such as rock music production and recording techniques, an introduction into mixing for motion pictures and live concert recording.
