Letter: Bisset Was My Cherished Friend

Tom McGinley describes Bisset as "a friend to everyone he met"

The author is longtime advisor to Radio World.

John Bisset, who died last week, was one of my most cherished long-term friends and colleagues in this incredible business.

I first met John around 1980 at an NAB Show. Soon thereafter we both joined up with Radio World as contributing columnists and technical advisors. His Workbench feature became and remains one of the best published series of valuable how-to advice for broadcast engineers everywhere.

When I moved to D.C. in 1984, one of the first engineers I contacted was John. He invited me to the monthly lunch meeting of WEBE, the Washington Executive Broadcast Engineers, where a young Steve Church was unveiling and demonstrating his Telos 10 telephone hybrid.

We collaborated on numerous projects in the D.C. area during the 1980s and ’90s, often with his Multiphase consulting/contract business.

I talked with John for over an hour just before he entered hospice. He was completely at peace with his situation and very much looked forward to his next adventure. We reminisced about the fun times we’d shared over the years and all the fellow engineers we worked with.

John was a friend to everyone he met, always extending a warm helping hand. A truly unique and remarkable talent our industry will miss for a long, long time. Rest in peace, John.
