Letter: IPAWS Won’t Necessarily Fill the EAS Gap

It won't make a difference if broadcasters ignore emergency alerts, writes a reader

In this letter to the editor, the author responds to the story “NOAA Weather Radio Disruptions Highlight Need for EAS Backups.” Radio World welcomes letters to the editor on this or any story. Email [email protected].

Great in-depth reporting from RW as usual. I would add however that even if NWS alerts were sent through IPAWS, there is no guarantee it will make a difference to most station operations or service to listeners.

While broadcasters are required to maintain EAS equipment, they remain free to ignore actual emergency alerts (not tests) distributed by EAS, except for code EAN, now called the National Emergency Message.

No EAN has ever been sent in an emergency.
