Letter: Which Holiday Again?

A reader shares his thoughts on Columbus Day

Radio World welcomes letters to the editor on this or any story. Email [email protected].

I read with interest in the SmartBrief newsletter that I wouldn’t be receiving an email on Monday, Oct. 14. However, there was an error in the news story that I wanted to bring to your attention.

Are you aware that the correct name of the federal holiday on Oct. 14 is Columbus Day and not Indigenous People’s Day? As a journalist, I would expect that “facts matter” so can I count on Radio World to issue a correction?

You’re welcome to use my name as the individual who pointed out the error.

— Jeff Andrulonis, founder/president, Colonial Radio Group

Editor in Chief Paul McLane replies: Columbus Day is one of 11 official U.S. federal holidays. President Biden has issued proclamations for Indigenous Peoples’ Day over the past three years. Radio World typically notes both Columbus Day and Indigenous People’s Day in our postings but did not in this case. Pew Research Center has an interesting article on the name of the day elsewhere, including names used by local and state governments.
