If you’d like to know what it sounds like when Bruce Reese, Jeff Smulyan and Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein make music together, here’s your chance.
The NAB Marconi Radio Awards Dinner and Show in September will feature a performance by The Formats. If you haven’t heard of them, don’t blush; it’s an ad hoc broadcaster band led by blues guitarist and BMI songwriter Steve Cropper and featuring Adelstein on harmonica.
Band members include “singers” Bruce Reese, the joint board chair of NAB and president of Bonneville; Emmis Communications CEO Jeff Smulyan; Sandusky Radio President Norman Rau; Regent Communications SVP of Operations Fred Murr; and BMI President/CEO Del Bryant.
Air America’s Gary Krantz and ABC Radio Group President Mitch Dolan play guitar; Greater Media President/CEO Peter Smyth tickles the keyboard; Norm Phillips, most recently with Susquehanna Radio, is on bass; and South Central Communications President-Radio Craig Jacobus and Urban Radio Broadcasting President Kevin Wagner play drums.
The band’s producer, former Jefferson Pilot President-Radio Clarke Brown, wants other musically inclined broadcasters to contact him at clarkebrown@bellsouth.net.
